Introduction This practical session will examine techniques used to examine the control of respiration and pulmonary function tests. Pulmonary function testing is an important part of clinical practice as it can quiet often provide a simple means of screening for the occurrence of obstructive and restrictive pulmonary disease. Pulmonary function testing also proves useful in assessing patients prior to surgery. This is particularly important in people who are obese or heavy smokers. In general a preoperative assessment reading of a vital capacity less than 20ml/kg of body weight is an indication of increased risk of postoperative respiratory complications. The aim of this experiment is to try and deduce how the relationship of changing pCO2, pO2 and pH are detected by the internal body systems and how the rate and depth of breathing is adjusted in order to try and maintain a degree of homeostatic control.
