Effect of exercise on rate of cardiac cycle It is my intention to discover what effect exercise has on the rate of cardiac cycle. Background The heart is arguably one of the most important organs in the human body; its function is to pump blood with enough force it can travel to the lungs, back to the heart and then around the body. The human heart comprises of four chambers, the left and right atrium and the left and right ventricles. To get blood pumping around the body it first enters the right atrium, is pushed into the right ventricle and then pumped to the lungs where it becomes oxygenated. (Atrial diastole then Atrial systole followed by Ventricular systole) Blood returns back to the heart from the lungs and enters the left atrium where it is pushed into the left ventricle.
