Diet By Joe Weller 11/11/07 Diet is the total food intake of an individual. Food contains nutrients taken in by the mouth and absorbed into body to supply its' vital needs. In order to remain healthy and try to prevent disease, a human being must consume, in the right quantities elements of the main food groups: carbohydrates, proteins and fats, as well as water, fibre and all vitamins and minerals including essential fatty acids and the essential amino acid. Amino acids are required for protein synthesis; Fatty acids are required for making phospholipids. Other amino acids and fatty acids cannot be synthesized by the body and must be provided by the diet. These are termed 'essential'. Failure to consume a balanced diet can lead to malnutrition; the diagram (wikipedia) shows the percentage of population undernourished on a world scale: Malnutrition is any disorder of nutrition resulting from eating an unbalanced diet....
