Describe the effects of stress on the body Selye defined stress as our emotional and physiological reactions to situations in which we feel in conflict or threatened and so there is a demand made on an organism to adapt, to cope or to adjust. The things which make us feel stressed are called stressors, they cause a stress reaction in the body, this could be environmental stressors such as your workplace or exams, or it could be a life event such as divorce or marriage. Selye looked at the effect stress has the body by experimenting on rats. He took rats and exposed them to stressful events such as the cold, surgical injury, exercise, sever the spinal cord and lethal drugs, he wanted to see their reactions to stress. He got 3 main responses:- alarm reaction, which happened 6-48 hours after the injury, the body temperature drops, liver activity decreases and the HPAA...
