Biology Practical Assessment The Effect of Temperature on Carbon Dioxide Production by Yeast Introduction: Yeasts are microbes that can be grown in culture solutions that act in the same way as enzymes. The process that is carried out is called fermentation, a form of anaerobic respiration and it takes glucose and produces carbon dioxide, alcohol and energy as described in the equation below: Glucose ? alcohol + carbon dioxide The carbon dioxide released by the yeast can be measured quickly and accurately using a Durham Tube and measuring the length of the gaseous bubble inside it. Hypothesis I predict that as the temperature gains 10?C the length of the amount of carbon dioxide produced will double until the yeast reaches its optimum temperature, around 40?C, after which point it will decrease rapidly, as the yeast enzyme is denatured.
