The EU legislation on clean air and water The European Union (EU) established various objectives to control the quality of air. They were introduced to 'avoid, prevent or reduce harmful effects on human health and on the environment as a whole'. Similarly the quality of water is also carefully monitored under the EU environment legislation. This legislation applies to a range of areas. These include catering for drinking water, water for shellfish and for bathing beaches. Limits have been placed on the amount of emission of nitrates from sewage sludge, urban water, waste and pesticides. These legislations all apply to any country part of the European Union. A scheme called the 'Blue Flag' has been introduced for beaches, which are used by holidaymakers. These blue flags can be awarded to bathing beaches, which comply with certain microbiological standards and must also meet the criteria of a range of other aspects. The EU issues...
