The Biological Importance of water Water is important amongst all living organisms. It covers 3/4 of the earth's surface and makes up 50-90% of mass of living organisms. Water consists of 2 hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to 1 oxygen atom. Water has many properties which aid living organisms. Firstly water has a high density meaning water in its solid state is less dense than the liquid state. This is important to living things because it helps them in growing really big as it contains more oxygen than the air. Also water expands on freezing, making the ice less dense than the water so it floats to the top. This allows aquatic ecosystems to exist even in sub-zero temperatures. High latent heat of vaporisation, Water requires a lot of energy to change state form a liquid into a gas, and this is made use of as a cooling mechanism in animals (sweating and panting)...
