Angiosperms VARIATION MEANS THAT THERE IS A RANGE OF CHARACTERISTICS SO IF WIPED OUT THERE IS A GREATER CHANCE OF SURVIVAL. ·Petals: collectively form the corolla, and are often coloured and scented. They attract insects that visit the flowers and collect nectar and pollen, pollinating the flowers as they do so. Small grooves or darker lines in the petals called 'nectar guides' are thought to direct the insect to the nectarines within the flower. ·Sepals: collectively called the calyx. They are usually green, but sometimes they are the same colour as the petals. They enclose and protect the rest of the flower while it is in bud. ·Nectary: plants produce a sugary liquid called nectar to attract insects to the flower. ·Receptacle: the swollen base of the flower, which sometimes forms the succulent tissue of the fruit.
