Why Study GCSE Art?

Whether it's infants finger painting or taking the perfect holiday snap doesn't everyone like doing art?. GCSE Art links well with a range of subjects through the arts to the sciences. You'll learn to observe things closely and develop skills such as scale drawing, perspective and reproducing the effects of light and shade. You will spend time planning your work, and trying out ideas, before starting on a finished design.

GCSE Art: What Will I Study?

GCSE Art isn't just about drawing bowls of fruit, you could be working with textiles, pottery and jewellery. Video, photography and computer animation also appear in many GCSE Art courses. Inspiration comes from your own ideas, but you will study how other artists have worked and what they were trying to say in their pieces.

Most exam boards require you to produce a portfolio of work which will count towards about 60% of your overall coursework assessment. You also have to work on set pieces for the GCSE Art exam, usually over a few days.

GCSE Art... What Comes Next?

Whether you want to pickle sharks or photograph supermodels GCSE Art should start you thinking about how you can produce the art you want to. If you're creative, but Mum and Dad want you to get "a proper job", check out your local art college or uni for ideas about courses and careers. There are lots of directions you can head in - history of art degrees, technical skills courses in photography and video, graphic design, fashion, product design - the list is huge. Artists don't have to starve in an attic in Paris unless they really want to!
