... THE BRITISH MUSEUM, THE SAINSBURY AFRICAN GALLERIES On the 4th November 2002, I visited the Sainsbury African Galleries at the British Museum, with my art group. The trip was very interesting and a great opportunity to sketch some African art first hand, instead of having to copy from books or photos The collection consists of over 200,000 objects and includes both archaeological and contemporary material, which includes both unique masterpieces and objects of everyday life. Highlights of the collection include a magnificent brass head of a Yoruba ruler from Ife, Nigeria, Asante gold work from Ghana and the Torday collection of Central African sculpture, textiles and weapons. There was also a great amount of other masks, pottery, woodcarving, textiles and jewellery. Below is a bit about each of theses: Masks Masks are used at masquerade.
