In 1853 however, this was all to change. With America determined to force Japan to open its doors, an utterly defenseless Japan, enraged by the unfair treaties imposed by the western nations, embarked on what Richie (1986, P.7) refers to as the 'Japanese miracle'. Over a period of fifty years, Japan had miraculously modernised in nearly all aspects of society, unleashing a sense of national dignity that only further fueled their strength of will to triumph over the west.
