"This is the sad truth about the brainwashing effect of our tabloid newspapers. I work in Immigration law and the sheer amount of asylum seekers, some of whom have to wait an incredible and degrading 5/6 years just to get a "decision" on their immigration status by the Home Office - these are 99% of the time people who desperately want to work, who are banned from working and contributing to our society, who have skills and abilities to offer. Often, by the time they are given reugee status, they have lost hope and have clinical depression and mental health problems.......well wouldn't you....if you were treated like a criminal in a country from which you came to seek sanctuary from persecution???!!! Its disgraceful!!!! Our economy would certainly BENEFIT if these people were allowed to work, to pax tax and to contribute....don't you think?"
