The extent to which media owners are responsible for the output of their businesses, and the extent to which they have control over media output differs from case-to-case, and from perspective to perspective. It can be said that traditional Marxist theorists would probably support the view in question, as they believe that Media Owners control both the content and agenda of the media. Neo-Marxist theorists would instead point at the role of a dominant ruling-class ideology which would include the views and interests of the Media Owner in shaping media output, while Functionalist and Pluralist theorists would argue that the media reflects the views of society, not that of the media owner, and is based on social consensus rather than the imposition of an agenda or ideology.
