... Explain Plato's analogy of the cave [25] The Analogy of the cave describes a scenario in which, what people take to be as real, would in fact be an illusion. The analogy is of a cave that is inhabited by prisoners who have been chained and held immobile since childhood, not only are their arms and legs held in place, but their necks are also chained, fixing the position of their heads compelling them to gaze at a wall in front of them. Behind the prisoners is a large fire and between the fire and the prisoners there is an elevated walkway, along which people walk carrying things 'including figures of men and animals made of wood, stone and other materials'. The prisoners can only see the shadows cast by the men upon the cave wall, however not knowing they are shadows. The prisoners also hear echoes which bounce of
