Have a little read: ... Describe the main differences between the Utilitarianism of Bentham and Mill. Jeremy Bentham was a man of astonishing intelligence (he began to study Latin at the age of three). He was an atheist and a hedonist and thus believed that pleasure was the sole good and pain the sole evil. Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do. At the age of 21 he created 'the principle of utility'. This principle spanned from the expression 'the greatest good for the greatest number.' It is a teleological theory, which states that it is the total consequences of an action that establishes it rightness or wrongness. In other words, the self-interest and happiness in not just one self, but also everyone concerned is what matters, i.e.
