If you really try hard to please your only creator, Allah, by doing a good deed or trying to read Qur'an every day or even trying really hard to always pray namaz on time just to please your Lord, all these things will be counted as you struggling in the way of Allah, as Jihad. This means that you will get the same amount of credit as some one fighting to save Islam. Here is a hadith: "The restraining soul (or self) from its appetite, is the greatest holy war".
