Definitions of Abnormality To What Extent Have Definitions of Abnormality been Adequate and Successful? Attempts to accurately define abnormal behaviour so far have been unsuccessful. According to the definition of "deviating from social norms" you are abnormal if you break social norms, these are the unwritten but implicit rules that apply to society and are lived by everyday, unless you are abnormal. Although this definition is adequate it is very subjective and can vary on what a particular person thinks is abnormal. Also the context in which we deviate is a factor for example wearing a bather in a supermarket in Swansea would be unacceptable but wearing one in a supermarket in Spain would be acceptable. Also cultural differences make it hard for us to successfully identify some one that is deviating from social norms, for example some Indians burn their possessions to shame enemy tribes which would be acceptable in their...
