Social Learning Theory. This states that aggression is learned through reinforcement of direct experiences and imitation of aggressive models, such as parents, peers or even TV/Films characters. Aggressive behaviours may not be imitated simply because they have been learned - Vicarious reinforcement is required (Seeing praise for the behaviour). Support for this comes from Banduras (1963) Bobo Dolls experiment. Children were more likely to behave aggressively if they had observed an adult hitting and throwing the doll, particularly if they had seen the adult being praised or rewarded for the behaviour. Evaluation of Social Learning theory. (SLT) Strengths: * Explains how reinforcement in different contexts can lead to differences in behaviour in different roles. * Explains influences of TV/Media on the behaviour of children. Weaknesses: * Ignores biological factors such as genetic and hormonal influences. * Banduras experiment had low ecological validity and high demand characteristics. ...
