Examine the usefulness of participant observation Participant observation is sometimes called a form of subjective sociology, not because the researcher aims to impose their beliefs on the respondent, but because the aim is to understand the social world from the subject's point-of-view. This method involves getting to know the people being studied by entering their world and participating either openly or secretly. Its like putting yourself in the shoes of the people you're studying to experience events in the way they experience them. This method is the most flexible research method. Because a researcher doesn't pre-judge the issue by deciding in advance what is / is not important when studying social behaviour, they can react to events / ideas, follow leads, pursue avenues of research that had not occurred to them before their involvement with a group.
