It is said that if a person cannot control their life or aspects of their life then they are more likely to get more stressed. I think that people like to feel in control even if they are not so the perception of control is more significant than whether or not the individual is actually in control. Research indicates that control may either reduce or increase stress. An experiment by Laudenslager was done with rats. Each rat had a leaver which it could press but only one rat could end the electric shock by pressing the leaver and the other one had no control over the electric shocks.
