Discuss psychological research into risk-taking behaviour and/or errors in thinking about probability in relation to decision making? Risk taking behaviours such as rock climbing, gambling and drug taking represent one of the most perplexing problems in the field of psychology. The need for safety is fundamental, are people who take huge risks therefore illogical or mentally ill? Recent research findings show a different perspective on these behaviours; it seems that normal people are motivated to take risks as a result of their psychological makeup and the nature of the situation they find themselves in. Psychoanalysts at the turn of the 20th century concluded that it was not normal to overcome these natural fears at all, and risk taking behaviour was in fact evidence of a diseased mind. They could not conceive of any reason why people would choose to risk their lives, and as a result concluded that risk takers...
