Sarah Chowdhry Attribution Theory . Attribution is a theory of social cognition. It is about the processes people use when trying to make sense of the social interactions in which they, engage, and observe others engaging in. The emphasis here is placed upon the nature of the processes, as being comparable to how individuals adopt particular strategies when perceiving objects in their environment. Fritz Heider (1958) is widely recognized as being the founder of the attribution theory. According to him, there are two major kind of attribution that observers make when they decide on the causes of other peoples behaviour. 1. The first is called internal attribution. This is made when the observer decides that the personality caused them behave as they did. 2. The second is environmental attribution.
