What have research studies shown psychologists about the nature and function of sleep? We do not know exactly what functions sleep performs. One hypothesis is that sleep provides our bodies and brains with a chance to repair themselves. Another hypothesis views sleep simply as a behavioural response. Our bodies can get worn out by performing waking activities for 16 hours or so. There is a definite relationship between the number of hours we stay awake and how sleepy we feel. Perhaps waking activities use up some vital substances that can only be regenerated when we sleep. Or perhaps wakefulness produces some toxic chemicals that are broken down during sleep. There is no evidence to support either of these possibilities. The amount of physical activity people engage in has a rather small effect on the amount of sleep they need.
