Introduction To compare the depictions of the elderly I have chosen two contrasting stories, An Old Woman and her Cat by Doris Lessing and Anxiety by Grace Paley. These two stories show how differently society treats these elderly women, in Anxiety the woman is respected but An Old Woman and her Cat shows us how the elderly can be mistreated and left alone. It is a contrast between two very different women and two very different ways of life. With a title like An Old Woman and Her Cat one automatically assumes that the woman in the story will be alone. Elderly women with Cats are stereotyped as lonely women. Hetty in this case is no exception. Hetty has no family to care for her, we feel sorry for Hetty, " one daughter sent her Christmas cards, but...
