Medical Model 'Explanations of abnormality have become increasingly dominated by the biological model'. Give a brief account of the biological (medical) model of abnormality and consider its strengths and limitations (18 marks). The biological model of abnormality assumes that abnormal behaviours are a result of physical problems and should be treated medically. Key areas of interest focus on infections, genetics, biochemistry and neoroanatomy. The implication of this model for treatment is that it is possible to cure the patient by changing their biological processes. There are three suitable treatments; electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), drugs and psychosurgery. The model has it strengths; one is that it does explain some disorders, e.g. phenylketonuria (PKU) a form of mental retardation, as shown in Barr et al (1990) study found evidence to support this idea.
