Clinical depression is a type of affective (mood) disorder and is distinguished from the short-lived shallow depression, experienced by everyone at some stage, by its duration and the way it disrupts everyday functioning. The symptoms of U D D can be cognitive, such as low self esteem, loss of libido, suicidal thoughts and hopelessness, or emotional such as sadness and apathy. Behavioural symptoms may include disturbance of eating or sleeping patterns or poor care of self and others, whilst physical symptoms include significant changes in weight, loss of energy and menstrual changes.
