UNIT 2 - LEARNING INTRODUCTION- In this section you will learn the various ways in which people and animals learn as well as the ethical considerations of the studies conducted that has lead to this knowledge. We will look at phobias, aggression and various other methods of learning and indeed un-learning. Lesson 1 -CLASSICAL CONDITIONING You should know: The definition of learning Principles of classical conditioning The terms: 'un/conditioned stimulus' 'un/conditioned response' 'extinction' 'spontaneous recovery' 'generalisation' 'discrimination' The work of Pavlov The most famous studies completed in this area are by the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov. In the early 1900's Pavlov measured how much saliva a dog produced in different circumstances. Whilst doing this he noticed that salivation occurred when Pavlov approached with food for the dogs. Pavlov decided that the dogs had learned to associate the sound of the footsteps with food because the stimuli occurred together so many times. Pavlov tested the theory using the apparatus...
