Nicola White Choose one character from Act one and consider Churchill's methods of characterisation. What is it about this women's story that particularly interests you? In 'Top Girls' Caryl Churchill presents many characters to the audience all of which are able to make an impact on us. In the first Act, six women are introduced. Each of them from different backgrounds and periods of time. They sit and have a meal together and explain the differences in their lives. Lady Nijo a Japanese courtesan from the 13th century is portrayed in a very interesting way. Churchill is able to create an atmosphere in the play by using this character. Nijo is the third character introduced to us. 'Top Girls' begins with a Restaurant scene. Marlene is celebrating her promotion to managing director with five women from the past.
