Evacuation was introduced in September 1939. This was due to the fact that people feared bombing and invasion and this fear had manifested from the horror that had been experienced during World War I and because they knew that the Polish had been heavily bombed during Blitzkrieg where civilian casualties had been very high. To keep civilian casualties in Britain to a minimum, specific "vulnerable" groups where evacuated from the main cities to the countryside. These groups included schoolchildren, mothers and young children, pregnant women, blind and disabled people and teachers.
