Why is education such a difficult concept to define? What is a concept? What is a contested concept? What is it about education that makes it a contested concept? There are many things which make education a contested concept. Firstly, the term 'education' can mean different things to different people. There is no one right definition of it. Therefore, we can only provide substantive, not factual based information. What are value positions? (Values or Value judgements) Values There are many different definitions of the term 'value'. It can mean the 'quality that renders something desirable or valuable'. However, it can also mean 'to hold dear' or to 'regard highly'. Furthermore, it can mean an 'ideal accepted by some individual or group'. When people have to move houses, they usually have their house 'valued'-in this context, it would mean 'to make an estimate value of the house'.
