Rebecca Leverett Why did people have such different views on the employment of children? Factory owners wanted child labour as children were cheaper, easier to discipline and were small which meant they were able to easily get under the moving machines. The factory owners were only interested in profits and not the health risks or dangers the children were being put under. They believed that profit was only made in the last few hours of the day, and the children were an essential part of the process. Due to children needing discipline and supervision factory owners felt they were helping parents by providing child care and keeping them off the streets. "Devil makes work for idle hands", if the children weren't working they would get bored and the only other alternative for them would to go out onto the streets causing trouble.
