James Bevan Psychology - Section A Experiment: Milgram. A) Describe how deception was used in your study. Initially there were newspapers sent out to advertise the experiment. He claimed the experiment was measuring memory when infact this was deception as he was measuring obedience to an authoritive figure. Next the participants were given a role which they assumed was given randomly. Little did they know, this was pre-determined to make sure the participant was the teacher each time. After this they were told that they were going to be shocking the learner; this again was a lie as they weren't shocking him at all. To add to the realism of the setting they were given a 45V 'test shock' in order to make them believe the apparatus was genuine. Accordingly this was the only available shock as it was connected to a 45V mains supply to deceive them. This shows the breach of ethics B)...
