Incarceration of Women with Children Parents who are in prison face many problems in maintaining meaningful relationships with their children, and this is especially true for imprisoned mothers. Incarceration is the imprisonment of a person as a result of a crime they have committed. Although the length of imprisonment varies depending on the crime and the circumstances surrounding the crime, the fact remains that mothers who are in jail are separated from their children. It is impossible to describe how all children are affected by their mother's incarceration. The degree to which any child may be affected by his or her mother's imprisonment will be determined by their age, personality and the prior relationship with their mother. The type of care a child receives while their mother is in jail may vary depending on the length of time spent separated from their mother, and the opportunities they have for contact...
