How Effective Are The Punishments Used In Schools Today Compared To Those Used In Roald Dahl's Time? Since the 1920's schools and punishments have changed dramatically. At the age of eight in 1924, Roald Dahl's life at school was hell compared to life at school in the 21st century. You would be physically abused and it was totally legal, unlike today is you so much verbally abuse a student you could be taken to court for doing so. Punishments in schools today are more realistic and 'painless'. For example if you misbehave in a lesson, the most you could get is a forty five minute detention and/or verbal warning from your head of year. If you continued to misbehave and not stay on task you would then be reported to the head of year and be put on 'Report'. This is like a record; you have to get it signed...
