Discuss the assertion that the relationship we have with others is the most important influence on our development throughout the lifespan. There are four aspects to the term 'development': personality; cognitive development; social development and biological development. Common sense suggests that a range of factors influence all four aspects and that our relationships with others comprise an significant factor but are they the most important? Are some relationships more important than others? This essay will be assessing the validity of these assertions. We begin by examining the relationship between child and parent and look first at John Bowlby and his theory of attachment. Bowlby considered that a strong attachment to a mother figure was necessary for an individual's psychological well being in infancy and in later life.
