Essay: Describe and evaluate 2 theories of play. "Play is a common occurrence, yet a curious phenomenon"1. For over a century, Play has been the subject of much psychological debate [and subsequent research]. Many different views have been put forward as to the function and benefits of Play. This essay will describe and evaluate two such theories of play, worthy of closer study: the 'Excess Energy' theory [Spencer 1873], and Piaget's [late 20th century] cognitive-developmental theory. The theory of 'Excess Energy' is criticized by many for its lack of supporting evidence and failure to agree with more recent theories; however, as one of the first ever theories of play [1873], it is deserving of our acknowledgement.
