The research hoped to discover how a child would react when left with a stranger in a room and how they would react upon the return of their mother and the type of attachment formed with the mother. The 3 types of attachment were called Secure, Avoidant and Resistant. If an infant had a secure attachment, then the infant would become distressed when the caregiver leaves but when the caregiver returns the infant reaches a state of contentment and immediately seeks contact, this is meant to show that the caregiver is emotionally available, sensitive and supportive.
