3. Critically asses the value of each of these as explanations of human behaviour. The psychoanalytic theory can not be accepted or rejected as a total package as the scope covered by it is so broad. The theory had a large impact on psychology and prompted much discussion, further research and introduced a new psychological vocabulary. Thousands of empirical studies have been carried out on various aspects of Freudian theories. Fisher and Greenberg (1977) carried out a comprehensive study and concluded that Freud was right in some areas, wrong in others and too vague to be tested in others. Many studies were made into the validity of Freud's theory of personality types, especially Oral and Anal. When relevant character traits were identified they appeared to relate to similar character traits in the parents (Beloff,1957), so even if a relationship was found between cleanliness and toilet training it could equally be a...
