How to cope with disagreements with adults * Children or adults that are not listening through general disrespect If you make eye contact with the adult or child you can draw their attention towards you. Calling out a child's name will make them turn to face you so that you can talk to them. If you lower the tone of your voice and talking in a quiet calm manner, the adult or child would have to concentrate more to try to hear what you are saying and will also help calm an active child down enough to listen to you attentively. It's also an affective method to calm an angry parent who is shouting and doesn't want to hear what you are saying. You could also hold a child's hands so they know it's them that you are talking to.
