Kishin Mahtani Health Per. 2 Affecting as many as 1 in 500 Americans, Autism is a brain function disorder that appears before the age of 3. Children with autism have problems with social interaction, communication, imagination, and behavior (they have a narrow and repetitive pattern of behavior). The cause is relatively unknown. Autism belongs to a family of related brain conditions affecting behavior early in life. Physicians often refer to autism and these other conditions with a single name -- pervasive developmental disorder. I've read an article in TIME magazine, their documentary talked about a family with two autistic children, one of which severely diagnosed, imagined that he was, in fact, the transformer toy that he was playing with.
