Abstract This experiment studies the effects of music on short-term memory recall. It aims to discover whether music can have positive, or negative effects on recall in an experimental situation. Basically, the experiment was conducted in a controlled environment; a list of words was presented and learnt either with, or without music. Then, twenty seconds later they were asked to recall this information. The "Independent Variable" is a control group with no music and the same information; the "dependent variable" (that which we are changing) is the condition in which the participant uses music during the learning process The participants were all aged between sixteen and seventeen years of age, and of mixed sexes all with an equal chance of selection.
