Outline & evaluate explanations for forgetting in the STM Forgetting is when the memory has disappeared and it is no longer in your memory or the memory is still stored in the memory system but for some reason you cannot retrieve it. Trace Decay is an explanation for the short term memory; it assumes that memories leave a trace in the brain. So this theory is suggesting that forgetting occurs as the fading of a memory trace. Waugh & Norman were psychologists who did experiments on trace decay and they presented participants with a series of 16 numbers. They were given a number from the series and then asked which number followed it. This was known as the serial probe technique. This experiment didn't really prove that trace decay existed.
