Short term memory has a limited capacity, that is generally regarded to be between 5 and 9 items, but long term memory is considered to have a much greater, unlimited capacity. Long term memory also has a much greater duration, considered to be a lifetime, whereas short term memory has a limited duration of 18 to 20 seconds, if material is not rehearsed. Short term memory also encodes material differently, it does this by rehearsing the material acoustically (repeating it over and over), i.e. it stores the memory via sound, but long term memory stores material by its meaning. 2.
