Short term memory has a limited capacity, that is generally regarded to be between 5 and 9 items, but long term memory is considered to have a much greater, unlimited capacity. Long term memory also has a much greater duration, considered to be a lifetime, whereas short term memory has a limited duration of 18 to 20 seconds, if material is not rehearsed.
