Assignment 2 Memory. Part 1: a) Describe two differences between short term and long term memory. Short term memory is a system for storing information for brief periods of time, however long term memory holds a vast quantity of information, which can be stored for long periods of time. There are distinct short term and long term stores in the multistore model. Experimental evidence suggests that short term memory and long term memory operate differently in terms of capacity and duration. Short term memory has a limited capacity, for example; we can only hold a small number of items at any one time. One way of assessing short term memory capacity is by measuring immediate digit span. It is a technique which involves reading out a list of random digits and then asking the participant to repeat them back in the correct order.
