Does the working model solve all the problems with the modal model? By Eli Alder The modal model is also known as the multi-store model of memory. Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) proposed that there were three different kinds of memory, which were organized in a linear order. These were the sensory registers (touch, taste, smell and hearing), short term memory (limited capacity) and long term memory (permanent memory store, seemingly limitless.) Sensory registers/buffer stores might process a range of different types of memory, for example, iconic (visual) and echoic (aural) memory. If an item of information is retained in the short term memory through rehearsal, then it is more likely to be transferred into the long term memory. Therefore, information can only enter the long term memory once it has been rehearsed sufficiently in the short term memory.
