"An Arch Mediocrity" How far is this an accurate summary of Lord Liverpool's Premiership? Benjamin Disraeli accused Liverpool of being an "Arch Mediocrity" in his book Conningsby written in 1844. It is certainly easy to see why Disraeli despised Liverpool even though they were both of the same party, Disraeli was a notorious Dandy and a famous wit (when congratulated on becoming Prime Minister he replied "Yes I have reached the top of the greasy pole"), Liverpool on the other hand was known to be untidy in appearance and was described by James Hare as looking "As if he had been on the rack three times and saw the wheel prepare for a fourth" and was not known at the time for his intellectual status.
