What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of First Past the Post? First Past the Post (referred to as FPTP) is an electoral system used in the United Kingdom in both general and local elections. It has several characteristics, that can be divided into advantages of the FPTP system and disadvantages of the FPTP system. These are outlined below. Ma major advantage of using FPTP is the sheer simplicity of the systems underlying means of working; it is easy to understand and easy to operate. The system uses a simply-designed ballot paper, in which there is only one vote and the counting of these votes is simple and straightforward.
