To What Extent was catholic emancipation the must important reason for the disintegration of the Tories between the years 1827-30? During the years 1827-30 the Tory government collapsed due to a number of reasons which included the issue of catholic emancipation but also some other issues which will be covered in this essay. The Tory government sudden disintegration started in February 1827 after Lord Liverpool's stroke. He resigned in March 1827 after 15 years of ups and downs as prime minister. This therefore removed the only Tory who could hold the party together and stop a split forming. There were also disputes over the succession of his role as prime minister. The period of 1827-30 can be seen as one in which key shifts in existing party allegiances took place.
