Michael Bradley To What Extent Was Peel Responsible For The Conservative Victory In 1841? In 1841 the newly named Conservative Party won the General Election due to many reasons. Some reasons were due to the Whigs incompetence in power before the Election other reasons were down to the leadership of Peel and the recovery of the Conservative Party during their period in opposition after the 1832 Reform Act and others reasons were down to the events that happened before the Conservative victory such as Peel's Tamworth Manifesto and the Bedchamber Crisis of 1839. In Peel's Tamworth Manifesto (1834) Peel accepted the 1832 Reform Act and stated that he needed to adapt to the new era of politics. In his speech he outlined his vision for the 'Conservative' Party, not the Tory Party. Peel was not the first person to call the party 'Conservative' but it was he that officially branded the party thus...
