David Lloyd George Born in Manchester but raised in Wales, Lloyd George was from early days devout and industrious. An ambitious Welsh nationalist, he was elected to Parliament in 1890 and soon made himself known for his radicalism and anti-imperialism, which was demonstrated by his bitter opposition to the South African War. In 1905, the Prime Minister, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, appointed Lloyd George as president of the Board of Trade where he launched important welfare reforms such as the Old Age Pension Act of 1908. That same year he was named Chancellor of the Exchequer in the government of Herbert Asquith. In 1908 DLG became Chancellor of the Exchequer. This was a notable promotion and made him a strong competitor for the premiership after Asquith.
